Three types of gamma ray bursts

چکیده
A multivariate analysis of gamma-ray burst (GRB) bulk properties is presented to discriminate between distinct classes of GRBs. Several variables representing burst duration, fluence and spectral hardness are considered. Two multivariate clustering procedures are used on a sample of 797 bursts from the Third BATSE Catalog: a nonparametric average linkage hierarchical agglomerative clustering procedure validated with Wilks’ Λ and other MANOVA tests; and a parametric maximum likelihood model-based clustering procedure assuming multinormal populations calculated with the EM Algorithm and validated with the Bayesian Information Criterion. The two methods yield very similar results. The BATSE GRB population consists of three classes with the following Duration/Fluence/Spectrum bulk properties: Class I with long/bright/intermediate bursts, Class II with short/hard/faint bursts, and Class III with intermediate/intermediate/soft bursts. One outlier with poor data is also present. Classes I and II correspond to those reported by Kouveliotou et al. (1993), but Class III is clearly defined here for the first time. X-ray Transients from X-ray Binaries to Gamma Ray Bursts
We discuss three classes of x-ray transients to highlight three new types of transients found with the Wide Field Cameras onboard BeppoSAX. First there are the transients related to Low Mass X-ray Binaries in outburst, typically lasting weeks to months and reaching luminosities of the Eddington limit for a few solar masses. Recently another subclass of outbursts in such binaries has been discov...

The paper presents the nowadays definition of the phenomenon of cosmic gamma ray bursts, refers to the main alternative models of their origin and proposes three promising domains of new observations in the incoming decade. Using the Euclidean value of < V/Vmax > as a cosmological distance indicator, we derive the isotropic-equivalent characteristic peak luminosity of gamma-ray bursts both longer and shorter than 2 s. The short bursts have essentially the same characteristic peak luminosity of 0.6 × 10 erg (0.064s) as do the long bursts. This may apply also to bursts with durations less than 0.25 s. The local spac...
متن کاملIs Thermal Emission in Gamma-Ray Bursts Ubiquitous?
The prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts has yet defied any simple explanation, despite the presence of a rich observational material and great theoretical efforts. Here we show that all the types of spectral evolution and spectral shapes that have been observed can indeed be described with one and the same model, namely a hybrid model of a thermal and a non-thermal component. We further show th...
متن کاملClassification of Swift’s gamma-ray bursts
Context. Two classes of gamma-ray bursts have been identified in the BATSE catalogs characterized by durations shorter and longer than about 2 s. There are, however, some indications for the existence of a third class. Swift satellite detectors have different spectral sensitivity than pre-Swift ones for gamma-ray bursts. Therefore we reanalyze the durations and their distribution and also the c...
